Lipid and Nutrition

Metabolic diseases pose a growing threat to public health.  We are a preclinical research group interested in redox biology and natural products discovery associated with metabolic syndromes.  Prof Azlina is the Principal Investigator of the Lipid & Nutrition Lab. Our research focuses on discovering antioxidants from natural products, especially those of Malaysian origin. We are particularly interested in identifying bioactive compounds from plant sources by establishing their mode of action as antioxidants and their role on protective cellular components against oxidative damage. Furthermore, we investigate how some of the antioxidant-rich plant extracts may affect signalling pathways involved in disease development.

In vitro cell culture and animal models are utilised to study the effects of these plant extracts in various settings.  These include hyperlipidaemia, hyperinsulinemia, colorectal cancer, and breast cancer, to name a few. Our research aims to identify molecular biomarkers associated with oxidative stress in these populations.  Together with our collaborators, we employ multi-omics technologies in our research including genomics, proteomics and metabolomics.
