Synthetic Biology
(Medicinal Mushroom Research Group)

Synthetic Biology Laboratory (CG27) houses the Medicinal Mushroom Research Group (MMRG). The group was established circa 2008, anchored by Professor Dr. Fung Shin Yee and Dr. Muhammad Fazril Mohamad Razif.  We focus on mushroom research, advocating the safety and bioactivities of mushrooms, particularly mushrooms of medical importance, and examine their anti-proliferative, anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, and immunomodulatory properties, to name a few. We are also involved in the discovery of fungal biomolecules using step-wise purification methods, complementing it with -omics studies.

Over the past decade, MMRG has pioneered scientific research on Tiger Milk Mushroom, the medicinal gem of Malaysia, gaining much attention amongst natural health advocates. MMRG’s work with Tiger Milk mushroom has propelled our success with the dedication and diligence of all past colleagues including Dr. Yeannie Yap Hui Yeng, Dr. Lee Sook Shien, Dr. Kong Boon Hong, Dr. Peter Cheong, Mr. Alvin Yap Chee Sum, Mr. Yong Yen Sun and Dr. Eng Jie Yi. MMRG has active collaborations with various universities and industries and hopes to tap into nature’s many hidden secrets. We aim to provide solutions and a platform from which many can learn and develop nutraceuticals based on natural compounds with bioactive properties.
